Mindset: From Scarcity to Abundance

If you know me, you know that I am a huge promoter of positivity. I speak all the time about having a strong, positive mindset and how that helps you in so many ways in your life. An abundance mindset is a component of a positivity mindset except it focuses on the abundance in life.

I decided to write this article because I noticed some HUGE scarcity mindsets within my clients, family and friends, and even within myself. I noticed people saying things like, “I can’t afford that,” or “I’m not smart enough to start my own business,” or they see someone being successful doing what they want to do and I hear them say, “Well, that’s her/him. I could never be successful doing that.”

I used to be absolutely obsessed with saving money when I worked my 9-5. It was something that was ingrained in me since I started working my first retail job at 16: save 10% of every check. Anyone else hear that in High School? Well, it took me a looooooong time to shift my thinking into a more abundant one. Now, instead of thinking that I need to save for a rainy day, I know and recognize that there is more than enough money in the world and spending the money that I do have is just telling the universe that I am open to receiving more money in return.

It should be pretty easy to tell which type of mindset you have. If you find yourself thinking more negatively about money and your ability to make money, then you probably have more of a scarcity mindset. And conversely, if you find yourself thinking more positively about money, and you know and understand that there is more than enough money in the world to go around and you exercise that, you probably have more of an abundance mindset. Truth be told, most people have a bit of both and it really depends on the situation. That’s okay, but I think we can all agree that having more of an abundant mindset will get you much farther in life. Not only will it give you more ease, happiness, and overall success, you will also feel less failure, will reach your full potential and will reach your goals faster. So, let’s get to how you can go about doing this yourself.

  1. Use your affirmations. If you know me at all, you know I LOVE affirmations and truly believe in them. The more you say them the more you begin to believe them. Here are some of my favorites: “Abundance flows easily into my life,” “I live an abundant life,” “Money comes easily and effortlessly to me,” and “Attracting success comes easily and natural to me.”

  2. Express gratitude. Being grateful for what you have in your life promotes positive mindset. And we already know what the power positivity has on our lives (aka the Law of Attraction). You could do this consistently by starting a gratitude journal and writing down 3-5 things you are grateful for in your life every day. Whenever you find yourself in a bad mood, you can start thinking about all of the things you are grateful for and sure enough, you will start to leave your bad mood behind.

  3. Ease back on the media you consume. The news is often extremely negative and focuses solely on what we don’t have but “should,” or what we “need to have”  based on society’s standards. On social media, such as Facebook and Instagram, we often find a “lack of.” How many times have you gone on Facebook and seen someone complain about their day job or how shitty their day has been? All the time, right? What we don’t often realize is how much that affects our mindsets, attitudes and overall moods. I’m certainly not saying to cut out all social media or news sources, but be more intentional about visiting Facebook and about what news sources you watch and read.

  4. Share what you already have with the world. You already have a TON of value to share with the world. Sharing that value and that knowledge is demonstrating to the Universe that you know you will get that value brought back to you. There is more than enough value to go around. So share your material things, your time and energy, your value, your praise, and recognition. Get it out there and allow it to come back to you.

  5. Look for abundance in the world and note it. Whenever you notice a moment in your life or in someone else’s life where having an abundance mindset helped them, note it! Remember that it happened and start to teach your brain to understand that abundance already exists and you have access to it too.

  6. Watch what you say. This one is difficult because it can be really difficult to monitor what you say. But to be conscious and watch what you say is a fantastic way to re-teach your brain to not have a scarcity mindset. When you have those moments where you say, “Oh no, I can’t afford that shirt,” notice that you say it and switch it to “how can I afford this shirt?” The actual act of noticing it and switching it will change the way you think over time.

Now that you have the tools to start to change up your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance, start implementing them as soon as possible! It certainly is something that will take far longer to accomplish than overnight and the sooner you get started the sooner you will start to see an abundance mindset within yourself.
