8 Steps to a Healthier You (Guest Post)

By: Andrea Del Mar

You may probably know already a little about how to lead a healthy lifestyle. With good food habits and daily physical activity, you’re on your way to a healthier life! But, with our busy lifestyles, sometimes it can be hard to maintain it. We can sometimes slip into the habit of choosing unhealthy snacks, buying fast-food, or spending our free time watching TV or in front of a computer for long hours with no breaks. School, work, our social life, plus all of the other things that we do, can make it hard to find time to be active and practice everything that we should and want to do on a regular basis.

That’s why it’s so important to stop, take stock and make a conscious decision to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Here are 8 steps to leading a healthier lifestyle:

1.   Eat Consciously and Holistically

Avoid processed foods altogether, you’ll be better off! Boost your plant ratio! Whether it’s beet and goji berries speeding methylation, tomatoes, and carrots soaking your cells in carotenoids and lycopene, garlic and onion adding sulfur to your diet to soothe inflammation, or bell peppers loading your body with vitamin B6. You’ll definitely feel better if you bulk up on a rainbow-colored diet throughout your day.

To ensure that you’re fully conscious while you’re eating, it can be really helpful to take a moment a moment before you eat, take a deep breath, and smile. Also, sit comfortably to eat your food! Give thanks for your food, and eat slowly, actually tasting your food, and stop when you feel full. Try not to watch TV, do work, check your phone or computer while eating. When you do this, you become unconscious of your food, you don’t enjoy it and finish by overeating.

2.   Choose Water!

Water is essential for our bodies to function. Do you know that about 60% of our body is made up of water? Water is needed to carry out body functions, remove waste, and carry nutrients and oxygen around our body. Since we lose water daily through urine, bowel movements, perspiration, and breathing, we need to replenish our water intake.

3.   Stay Away from Negativity

You become what you allow into your life! Stay positive, and you’ll see things turn around for the better. Avoid negative self-talk, write down your goals and have positive mantras to boost your mood. Go outside, or buy a plant! And practice gratitude every day. If you shift your thoughts to focus on what you do have and what makes you happy, your brain will continue to notice the abundance in your life, leaving you feeling grateful and ultimately happier. Fortunately, expressing and feeling gratitude is a choice that can be exercised at any time. When you’re feeling negative, think of something that you’re grateful for, and smile to the Universe!

4.   Read

Read a book, an article, a poem, anything, but just read! Many studies have shown that reading reduces stress. Reading is an essential part of many jobs and degrees, but it’s easy to forget the joys of reading a good book for fun! Starting a book that has no direct ties to your daily routines can help you forget your own worries, by absorbing yourself in the worries and story of the plot; stimulating physical benefits including a reduced heart rate and less muscular tension. Other than that, reading improves your memory, expands your vocabulary, and also improves your focus and concentration!

5.   Sleep for Energy!

Think of your body as a smartphone. You’re used to watching the charge symbol wear down during the day when you use it. The same thing happens to your body; we’re just like a meter. You burn through vitamins, antioxidants, and suffer DNA damage during the day. Your body is made to repair and replace these effects and restore your systems to full charge when you’re sleeping. Studies have indicated that it takes 8-9 hours of sleep on a regular basis to fulfill this recharge.

6.   Pick Up a New Hobby

Picking a new hobby can reduce stress. This may sound counterintuitive, but it’s true. Doing something you enjoy can be a great way to release stress because your mind can escape the other demands of the day while you focus on the pleasurable task at hand. Hobbies promote happiness, provides a social outlet, gives a confidence boost and bring new challenges! Taking the time to focus on something extracurricular that you enjoy, gives your brain a break and allows you to refocus once you return to work. Problems that once seemed unsolvable, can be more easily managed after taking a step away and coming back with a renewed outlook.

7.   Meditate

Meditation will help you become more mindful and aware with each passing day. You will gain control over your emotions, it decreases unnecessary stress, and you will likely make better life decisions! Unless you enjoy living at an extremely fast pace, you’re going to want to slow down at some point and enjoy living. Meditation arms you with the ability to take life gradually. Life isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Don’t rush through it and miss out on things you’ll be regretting later. Slow down your mind first, and then everything else will follow. Meditation is free, you can do it anywhere and it actually works. Go try it for at least 5 minutes, you won’t regret it.

8.   Practice Yoga

Yoga is a great workout. Personally, I do yoga 4 times a week and workout 4 times a week. It gets you in touch with your body, it can help your breathing technique, and most importantly, it improves your posture, improves your sleep, and it’s loads of fun! It can also help develop your physical and mental strength. Also, meditation is the key to all things yoga. Even If you can do every kind of complicated pose under the sun, it loses all of its true meaning if it’s not done with focus and thought. So grab the last two tips together and work it!
